The black boxes on the right are resizeable, and a great way to manage your shortcuts. I got them trough an application called 'Fences' by StarDock. It's still in beta but so far it's great - no (noticeable) performance loss, and even 100k less RAM usage
As you can see, I'm currently having a no-shit desktop with functionality as its main goal. NO WALLPAPER FOR YOU!
but but but... I like having wallpapers on my desk, when I'm taking a break from the various work going on, and want to see something pretty (or different).
Of course I can't have that many icons on my desktop either, as it annoys the ever living crap out of me. How some people can do what you've got going on here is beyond me sometimes.
But it's great that we both live in a world here that appreciates the entire spectrum of desktop functionality
Something awesome about the 'Fences' program (used for the shortcuts) is that if you doubleclick your desktop twice it hides all icons.
So you could have a wallpaper behind it, and doubleclick your desktop now and then You can also select icons to remain visible, so you can use it for parents/boss/'other person that shouldn't see certain icons on your desktop'

In order to support the artists that we feature, we ask that you the news article as well as check out the individual pieces. We understand that each day you may not be able to check out each and every one of the pieces, everyone has their own things going on. We just ask that you make an attempt to help support the growing Literature community.

You can also choose to turn your Quicklaunch into stacks or get yourself a Mac-like dock.
